Balotra is a city in Barmer district of Rajasthan. It is a historical city and is famous for hand block printing, textile industry and some of the ancient temples that attract devotees every year. Jalore, Barmer, Jodhpur and Bhinmal are some of the nearby cities from here.

Geography of Balotra

Balotra is located at geographical coordinates of 25.83°N and 72.23°E with an average elevation of 106 meters or 348 feet above sea level. It is located 101 kms from Barmer, and  438 kms from the state capital of Jaipur. The city is further located on the coast of the River Luni.

Transport in Balotra

The city of Balotra has a good road and rail connectivity. There are frequent bus services from here to all major Rajasthan cities like Jodhpur. Balotra junction is the nearest railway station from here, however Jodhpur junction is the nearest major station located at a distance of 100 kms. Jodhpur airport is the nearest one from here located at a distance of 108 kms.

History and Culture of Balotra

Balotra is a historical city that derives its name from its founder named Balaji Rajpurohit. It was initially a small settlement that developed into a well-established town over the years. The city is home to numerous ancient temples and is visited by devotees all around the year. Hindi and Rajasthani are the local languages spoken here. The city is also known for the annual desert and tribal fair, Mallinath Fair, happening at Tilwara. As per the census of 2011, city has a population of 74,496 and  a literacy rate of 75.52% .

Economy of Balotra

The city is well known for the textile industry. It is an important center of trade and processing of different fabrics in India with more than 5000 textile units here. This is a major source of employment for local people who are engaged in dyeing and printing of clothes.

Tourism in Balotra

The city is popular for many ancient temples, the most famous being Nakoda Jain Temple that is the most revered pilgrimage for the Jain community. Additionally, there are many other temples in the area including Rani Bhatiyaniji temple, Chonch mandir, Mohanraj ji Mandir, Jaanraaj Ji Mandir, Narsingh Ji Mandir, Hanuman Mandir and Khed Mandir.
